Three House Fires in Stoke-on-Trent

Stoke-on-Trent firefighters were called to three preventable house fires in the area yesterday.

"We can offer free Home Fire Risk Checks to everyone in the area where we can identify potential fire hazards in the home and ensure each property has fully working smoke alarms."

Assistant Area Commander for Stoke-on-Trent, Glynn Luznyj

The first incident was at a property on Summerbank Road in Tunstall where crews from Hanley and Burslem were called to a first floor bedroom fire. The call was received at 1.45am and two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.

The fire was caused by smoking materials and one male occupant was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. He did not require hospital treatment and the incident was closed at 3.30am.

Two crews from Hanley were later called to Stansgate Place in Cobridge at 8.40pm where a chip pan had caught fire after being left unattended. Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one hose reel jet to put out the fire and the incident was closed at 9.50pm.

At 11.50pm last night crews from Longton and Hanley were then called to a house fire on Ladybank Grove in Blurton. Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire in the living room which was caused by carelessly discarded smoking materials.

One male was treated at the scene with oxygen therapy, he did not attend hospital. The incident was closed at 1.20am.

Assistant Area Commander for Stoke-on-Trent, Glynn Luznyj said: "We have had a bad weekend in terms of preventable domestic fires and would urge occupiers to be vigilant when cooking or smoking in the home.

"Cooking should never be left unattended and we urge people to use deep fat fryers instead of chip pans as deep fat fryers are thermostatically controlled meaning they cannot overheat.

"Anyone smoking at home should take extra care when discarding cigarettes, ensuring they are fully out.
