Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service - Preventing, Protecting, Responding

Grass Fire in Cheadle

Crews from Cheadle, Longton, Hanley, Ipstones and Uttoxeter were called to Cheadle Park in Cheadle at 17.15pm yesterday, where 5,000 sq ft of grass and woodland was well alight.

"It takes a lot of manpower to deal with these types of incidents and those firefighters and appliances could well be required at more serious incidents."

Stoke-on-Trent Assistant Area Commander, Glynn Luznyj

Firefighters fought the blaze for 3 hours, leaving the scene at just before 9.00pm. Stoke-on-Trent Assistant Area Commander, Glynn Luznyj said: "The fire was started deliberately and spread so quickly that we required six pumps in total to contain and extinguish it.

"It takes a lot of manpower to deal with these types of incidents and those firefighters and appliances could well be required at more serious incidents. Because some irresponsible person has started this fire, it can delay response to other incidents and also wreaks havoc on the surrounding environment.

"If anyone has any information about how this fire was started, we would urge them to contact Staffordshire Police on 0300 123 4455."
