Chemical Spill in Little Aston Car Park

Five crews from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service attended a chemical spill at a car park on Burnett Road in Little Aston at the weekend.

"The chemicals can give off fumes so the immediate area was evacuated as a precaution and we then soaked up the chemicals and secured the drums to make the area safe."

Group Manager, Mark Williams

The call was received on Saturday just before 3pm where two drums of used dry-cleaning chemicals had been accidentally spilled onto the car park behind Francesco’s hair salon on Burnett Road.

The incident occurred when two men, who live in flats above a garage where the chemicals were being stored, were cleaning out the garage and came across the two chemical drums, which are believed to have been in the garage for approximately nine years.

The men attempted to roll the drums out of the garage and in doing so the lids fell off and spilled around 20 litres of the chemicals onto the car park. Firefighters from Lichfield, Burton, Stone and Hanley were called to the scene to soak up the chemicals and police closed Burnett Road and the immediate area was evacuated as a precaution.

Group Manager, Mark Williams said: "Upon arrival we found approximately 20 litres of used dry-cleaning chemicals spilled onto the car park. The chemicals can give off fumes so the immediate area was evacuated as a precaution and we then soaked up the chemicals and secured the drums to make the area safe."

The incident was closed at 4.40pm.
