Kitchen Fire in Maybank

Firefighters have praised a family for their quick-thinking and actions a kitchen fire at their property on Pitfield Avenue, Maybank at 8.40pm last night.

"We urge anyone cooking in the kitchen to stay in the kitchen until they are finished."

Crews from Newcastle and Burslem were called to the grill fire, which was out on arrival, and had been confined to the grill pan. Firefighters removed the pan and took outside to cool down as a safety precaution.

Mick Daniels, Newcastle Area Commander said: "The occupiers were distracted by a laptop which took their attention away from the grill, resulting in fat igniting and causing the fire.

"However, they did everything right in preparation for our arrival – they closed the grill off, evacuated the property safely and called 999.

"Their actions prevented the escalation of the fire however we would like to use this incident to highlight how easy it is to become distracted from cooking and how quickly a fire can happen. We urge anyone cooking in the kitchen to stay in the kitchen until they are finished."

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service provided the family with cooking safety information, a home escape plan and discussed the necessity of booking a free Home Fire Risk Check with the family and local residents.
