Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service - Preventing, Protecting, Responding

Cold Caller Warning

South Staffordshire residents are being warned about cold callers ringing to sell fire and security alarms.

"If you have any concerns about someone claiming to represent the force, please telephone 0300 123 4455 or in an emergency dial 999."

Chief Inspector for Staffordshire Police, Carl Ratcliffe

The alarms they are selling are believed to come with extortionately priced fitting and maintenance contracts and a number of elderly and vulnerable people have already been contacted by the company.

Assistant Area Commander for South Staffordshire, Neil Pedersen said: "We’ve had a call from a worried Codsall resident asking if the company was genuine and the Police have also received three similar calls. The feedback we’ve received suggests this company have been operating across the country.

"Here at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service we provide free smoke alarms to all residents as part of our Home Fire Risk Check service. To book a check call 0800 0241 999."

Chief Inspector for Staffordshire Police, Carl Ratcliffe commented: "In the same way as if someone came to your door trying to sell to you - consider very carefully any purchase from cold callers. Take the time to check out the organisation the caller claims to represent and the full details of goods or services on offer. If the offer is genuine, full details should be provided for you to consider without any pressure.

"If you have any concerns about someone claiming to represent the force, please telephone 0300 123 4455 or in an emergency dial 999."

Staffordshire County Councillor Ben Adams, Cabinet member for Communities and Culture, said: "We would advise people to be extremely cautious of any cold caller. Never agree to anything unless you have checked the organisation is legitimate first – if it is the caller will not make any objections. July is national Rogue Trader Awareness month and our trading standards team is working with many organisations to highlight the problems caused by those who look to exploit people for their own gain. Anyone with any concerns should call Consumer Direct on 0845 4040506 or trading standards on 01782 297094."
