Memories are Made of This

Elderly residents in Codsall will be recollecting and recording their memories during a new community session being held at Codsall Fire Station.

"The book will represent their lives and give future carers a resource to help trigger memories should any of these people be unfortunate enough to struggle with dementia or other health issues later in life."

Following the huge success of the Older Persons Wellbeing Course, the participants decided they wanted to stay together and formed a new community group, “Memories are Made of This.” Fronted by Madeline Cheadle, the Chaplain for Codsall Fire Station, the group will get together every Tuesday morning from 11 am – 1pm and work on a memory book project amongst other activities.

Katherine Haigh, Risk Reduction Technician at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were delighted to hear that the participants of the Older Persons course enjoyed their time together so much that they wanted to continue socialising.

"The idea of ‘Memories are Made of This’ is to create a memory book which each person has their own folder inside. The book will represent their lives and give future carers a resource to help trigger memories should any of these people be unfortunate enough to struggle with dementia or other health issues later in life."

The group will also increase the social networks of the members and anyone aged 60 and above is invited to join in: "We will be organising group outings, gentle exercise and seasonal crafts in addition to the weekly meetings,” said Katherine,

"We want to promote positive mental health and well-being and reduce the isolation some older people may experience."

Anyone interested in joining the group can contact Katherine Haigh on 01785 898795. Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is also encouraging family members, friends or neighbours to nominate people they know who may be interested in joining the group.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service will also endeavour to provide door to door transport for those who need it.
