Crews from Burton, Lichfield and an appliance from over the border in Swadlincote were called to Hill Street in Stapenhill at 7.00pm last night, where the basement area of a block of flats was on fire.

On arrival, firefighters found flats in close proximity to the fire had been evacuated however some residents in other more remote parts of the building were still inside and were evacuated as a precaution.
The fire is believed to have been started deliberately in one of six storage units which were situated in the basement area. The unit was being used to store televisions, decorating and general household materials.
The fire has left the basement area heat damaged and severely smoke damaged, some of the lower level flats were also left with some smoke damage.
East Staffordshire Assistant Area Commander, Paul Cullen said: "Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire using a main jet.
"A ventilation system from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service was also used to help clear the building of the thick smoke."
The fire was extinguished by 8.30pm and crews left the scene at 10.20pm.
