Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service - Preventing, Protecting, Responding

New Community Fire Station Proves Popular

The Sandyford Community Fire Station went live on Friday October 29th and the crews have so far attended over 10 incidents.

"Even though the initial drop-in sessions have now finished it is important for local people to be aware that this new station is very much community based and they should feel welcome to pop in."

Assistant Area Commander for Stoke-on-Trent, Glynn Luznyj

The first incident happened on Friday night at 6.30pm which was a bin on fire in Smallthorne.

Following the community sessions last week, a staggering 1,041 people have visited Sandyford Community Fire Station.

Members of the local community were invited to pop into the station from Wednesday last week between 2pm and 4pm to meet the crew, tour the brand new Community Fire Station and have a cuppa.

Assistant Area Commander for Stoke-on-Trent, Glynn Luznyj said: "We were delighted to see so many people taking an interest in the new Community Fire Station – on the first day alone we had over 250 visitors!

"We had expected that most people would come on the first day, however numbers have remained fairly consistent across the week and we have seen a number of people multiple times."

In addition to the tours, 157 children signed up to become a free member of the Welephant Club. For more information about the Welephant Club, which is open to four to eight year olds, visit www.staffordshirefire.gov.uk.

Glynn Luznyj added: "Even though the initial drop-in sessions have now finished it is important for local people to be aware that this new station is very much community based and they should feel welcome to pop in. We want local people to get to know the crew and vice-versa."

A further community session is being held on Tuesday 2nd November from 12 noon – 2pm. The Celebrate Safely Event will give fire safety advice in relation to fireworks, candles and cooking in preparation for key celebratory events in the calendar, including Bonfire Night, Diwali, Eid and Christmas.

Partner and community groups can book the new facilities, which seat up to 30 people, by ringing 01785 898734 or 01785 898897 during office hours. Slots are available weekdays from 9am – 10pm and at weekends from 9am – 5pm. Regular bookings have already been taken by two community groups, The Kidsgrove Wheelers and North Staffs Group of Advanced Motorists.
