The emergency phase of an incident at Rumenco on Derby Road in Stretton is now complete, although crews will remain at the incident overnight.
"There are still some remaining hotspots of fire and heat within the building and so crews will work throughout the night to ensure these are full extinguished.”
The emergency call for the incident was received at 10.15am this morning. The incident involved a chemical spillage and a fire within internal piping and ducting at the factory. Factory staff were evacuated and police cordoned off the road and advised nearby residents to keep doors and windows closed as a precautionary measure.
Firefighters in gas tight suits were sent into the affected area of the factory and used sand to absorb the chemical spill. Crews also used thermal imaging cameras to identify exactly where the fire was within the building.
Group Manager, Phil McFarlane said: “This was a very lengthy and complex incident. Although there was a fire this was not visible and so crews were required to dismantle piping and ducting in order to find the fire and then extinguish it. There are still some remaining hotspots of fire and heat within the building and so crews will work throughout the night to ensure these are full extinguished.”
