22/12/2010

Firefighters have issued a warning about using open fires to dry tea towels or similar items following a fire at a property in Audley.

"We would urge people not to put any combustible items near to fires or heaters, especially not to dry wet items."

Newcastle Crew Manager, Neil Gordon

Two crews from Newcastle attended a fire on Nantwich Road on Monday at 4.50pm after wet cloths being dried close to the fire ignited and the fire then spread to the carpet. The fire was out on arrival however the male occupant had only been alerted to it when his smoke detectors operated.

Newcastle Crew Manager, Neil Gordon said: "Thankfully in this incident, the fire didn’t spread too much and was out on arrival however if the man had not had working smoke alarms the fire could have been much worse.

"We would urge people not to put any combustible items near to fires or heaters, especially not to dry wet items. It is also essential to have working smoke alarms, as this incident highlights, the early detection meant the fire didn’t go un-noticed and didn’t have chance to spread and cause any serious damage to the property or injure the occupant."

Crews left the scene at 5.20pm.
