20/01/2011

Crews from Burton, Barton-under-Needwood and Abbots Bromley were called to a house fire on Field Lane in Horninglow at 2.30pm yesterday.

"We would like to remind everyone to ensure electrical appliances are not left on and unattended and also when using portable electrical items, ensure they are used in safe places."

East Staffordshire Assistant Area Commander, Paul Cullen

A man who had been working at the property returned to see smoke coming from the house and heard the smoke alarm operating. No one was in the property when the fire broke out.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reel jets to tackle the fire, which started in the kitchen and has left the ground floor of the property severely fire damaged. There was also considerable smoke damage throughout the property.

East Staffordshire Assistant Area Commander, Paul Cullen said: "Once we had extinguished the fire, an investigation commenced to find out how it started. It appears a laptop had been left on a hotplate which had accidentally been turned on which set the computer on fire.

"We would like to remind everyone to ensure electrical appliances are not left on and unattended and also when using portable electrical items, ensure they are used in safe places."

Crews left the scene at 6.05pm.
