Cigarette Causes House Fire in Belgrave

23/03/2011

A 61-year-old man had to be led to safety by Tamworth firefighters following a bedroom fire at his house on Honeybourne Road in Belgrave last night.

"The fire was caused by a cigarette which had not been discarded properly, the man is very lucky that his neighbour heard the smoke alarms."

Group Manager, Tim Hyde

The operating smoke alarms alerted the man’s neighbour who called the emergency services at 11.10pm and two crews from Tamworth were sent to extinguish the fire and rescue the man.

Group Manager, Tim Hyde said: "The man was asleep and had obviously been drinking so we had to force entry to the property where we found an armchair in the bedroom alight. Crews extinguished the fire whilst the man was led to safety.

"The fire was caused by a cigarette which had not been discarded properly, the man is very lucky that his neighbour heard the smoke alarms and alerted us otherwise we could have been dealing with a much more serious incident."

Crews left the scene at midnight and have this morning returned to the area to deliver After the Fire postcards to surrounding properties, to offer them a free Home Fire Risk Check. Tim added: "If anyone in the area would like to speak to crews whilst they are around today then please feel free or alternatively call 0800 0241 999 to book your free Home Fire Risk Check."
