Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service - Preventing, Protecting, Responding

Burton Workers Fire Safety Warning

15/04/2011

Statistics from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service show that a quarter of all workplace fires in the last 12 months in Burton were accidentally caused by incidents you’d more commonly expect to occur in the home.

"The same advice applies to people in the workplace as it does at home – do not leave cooking unattended."

Burton Watch Manager, Jim Bywater

The main causes of the incidents were toaster fires, microwave fires and food left cooking unattended – more commonly experienced in domestic properties.

Burton Watch Manager, Jim Bywater said: "It is a concern that a quarter of all workplace fires were mostly caused in the kitchen. The same advice applies to people in the workplace as it does at home – do not leave cooking unattended and ensure all electrical appliances are in good working order and are turned off when not in use.

"We have recently launched a cooking safety campaign and although this essentially targets domestic properties, the same types of fires can easily occur in the workplace as well.

"Burton firefighters will be visiting several commercial premises in the area over the next few weeks where there have been cooking related fires and talking to the workers about fire safety. It’s important businesses take fire safety seriously because even minor fires cause disruption, resulting in a loss of productivity.

"We do offer a free business support visit to commercial property owners and businesses; this involves providing fire safety advice and guidance. To find out more please call us on 01785 898917 and a member of staff will be happy to help."
