10/06/2011

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service have seen an increase in accidental house fires in Uttoxeter over the past three months.

"There are many ways in which a fire can start in the home so we would also encourage anyone who hasn’t already had one to book their free Home Fire Risk Check now."

Burton Watch Manager, Jim Bywater

Since April this year there have been four accidental house fires in Uttoxeter, one caused by a light fitting, two caused by chip pans and another caused by a carelessly discarded cigarette.

Burton Watch Manager, Jim Bywater said: "Although four fires may not sound like a lot, even one house fire is one to many.

"Last month we had two preventable house fires and then just two days ago we had another fire involving cooking oil in a pan left unattended, which caused significant smoke damage to the property.

"There are many ways in which a fire can start in the home so we would also encourage anyone who hasn’t already had one to book their free Home Fire Risk Check now.

"A Home Fire Risk Check can help to identify potential fire hazards in the home, including things that people may not have even been aware as hazardous. This includes overloading plug sockets, keeping combustible materials near to heaters, lamps or fireplaces, leaving tumble dryers, washing machines and dishwashers on overnight or whilst no one is home – all common occurrences.

"We also take into account people’s lifestyle habits, such as smoking, and provide advice to help you stay as safe as possible in your home. Anyone who wants a free Home Fire Risk Check can call 0800 0241 999 and we will arrange to come out at a suitable time and date."
