Tamworth firefighters fished four ducklings out of drainage pipes running underneath the fire station yesterday.

“The firefighters tried everything to reach the ducklings but nothing was small enough to reach."

Firefighters spotted a female duck on the yard quacking away and the reason why soon became clear – some of her chicks had fallen down into the drainage pipe.

Firefighters rushed to the aid of the ducklings, however they had managed to fall quite deep underground and could not be reached by hand.

Tamworth Area Command Administration Manager Lisa Jenkinson, who witnessed the rescue, managed to reach one of the ducklings via another grid leading into the drainage system however three of its siblings remained trapped.

“The mother duck had rounded up her seven other ducklings and obviously knew something had happened to the other four, so she stayed nearby the whole time,” said Lisa.

“The firefighters tried everything to reach the ducklings but nothing was small enough to reach. Eventually, we had the idea to fashion a grabber-type mechanism out of bamboo canes and an old coat hanger and after two hours of trying, the ducklings were finally reunited, unscathed, with their mum.

“We then boxed up all 11 ducklings and their mum and took them to a nearby lake just opposite the Snowdome where we released them and off they swam.”
