Deliberate Fire at Former Abattoir in Hanley

28/06/2011

Crews from Hanley, Burslem and the aerial ladder platform from Longton were called to a fire at the former Abattoir on Etruria Road in Hanley at 12.30pm this afternoon.

"Whoever started this fire was endangering themselves as well as members of the public."

Station Manager, Ian Read

A total of 15 people called to report the fire, as smoke could be seen coming from the roof of the property.

Station Manager, Ian Read said: "On arrival, firefighters were faced with a fire involving the roof of a 50 metre by 50 metre building. Approximately five metres by three metres was on fire, including refuse and ceiling joists.

"Once the fire was extinguished, a fire investigation was carried out and we believe this fire was started deliberately. Whoever started this fire was endangering themselves as well as members of the public and whilst various crews were tied up putting out this fire they could have been needed at a serious emergency.

The guilty party has also put their own life at risk, as well as the lives of the firefighters, and could have easily ended up trapped in the building which would have required crews to carry out a rescue. The incident has now been handed over to the police to investigate further."

Anyone with any information about the fire can contact Staffordshire Police on 0300 123 4455 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The incident was closed at 2.20pm.
