Fire at Hanley Masonic Centre Deliberately Started

Two crews from Hanley were called to a fire at the Hanley Masonic Centre on Howard Place in the early hours of this morning.

"The fire has left the function room smoke logged and fire damage has affected the carpet, curtain and a window frame."

Two calls were received reporting the fire, including one from the occupant of a flat above the centre, who had heard the centre’s alarms operating. They reported the fire and stated they were evacuating. No one was injured.

Crews arrived to find a fire in progress on the ground floor of the building and used one hose reel jet to tackle it.

Station Manager, Ian Read said: "Following a full fire investigation we have concluded that the fire was started deliberately. This incident has now been left with the police.

"The fire has left the function room smoke logged and fire damage has affected the carpet, curtain and a window frame."

Crews left the scene at 4.25am this morning and the fire investigation was complete by 12.00pm this afternoon.
