Firefighters remain at a building fire on Wentlows Avenue in Tean which took hold at around 4am this morning.
Seven people called to report the fire, the first coming from a commuter on their way to work, who saw smoke coming from a building close to Ark Gas Welding.
Crews from Cheadle, Longton, Uttoxeter and Hanley were called to deal with the fire, as well as the aerial ladder platform from Longton and the control unit from Stone.
The 40 x 20 metre three-storey building was well alight and forced entry was made by firefighters to begin tackling the fire. The structure of the building was soon looking to be unstable and so crews tackled the fire using main jets and aerial ladder platform from a safe distance.
The incident was scaled down to four appliances from seven at around 5.40am whilst firefighters continued to damp down. A fire investigation is now underway to determine the cause. It is not known at this stage how the building was being used.
