Crews from Hanley, Sandyford, Leek and the aerial ladder platform from Longton were called to the scene on Stoneyfields Avenue by a neighbour at 10.00pm last night.

On arrival it was confirmed that an elderly lady was inside and so forced entry via the front and side doors. Firefighters immediately commenced a search for the occupant and found her unconscious on the landing.

She was carried outside and efforts were made by firefighters to resuscitate the woman before she was taken to hospital.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire which was in the bedroom and involved a single bed and mattress.

Station Manager, Ian Read said: "The fire was confined to the bedroom however has left the property smoke logged. The lady was found on the landing outside the bedroom and carried outside by firefighters where attempts were made to resuscitate her.

"Sadly, the lady passed away after being taken to hospital and our thoughts are with her family and friends at this sad time.

"A joint fire and police investigation will take place this morning to establish how the fire started, however at this stage it is not believed to be suspicious."
