Station Manager, Brian Griffiths

A member of the public called the fire service after spotting a woman hanging out of a first floor window and seeing that the flat was on fire.

Three fire engines from Longton and Hanley were sent to the scene to rescue the woman and extinguish the fire.

Station Manager, Brian Griffiths said: "On arrival, the woman was still hanging out of the window so crews immediately put a ladder up the window and began to administer oxygen to her whilst four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property to tackle the fire.

"The firefighters searched for any other occupants as they fought the fire but there were no other people in the flat at the time. Crews carried the woman to safety and she was then taken to hospital.

"The fire was in the lounge area of the flat and has left the flat heavily smoke logged. A joint fire and police investigation is currently underway to establish the cause of the fire."
