Chip Shop Fire in Winshill

05/10/2011

Crews from Burton and Swadlincote have attended a fire at a chip shop on Hawfield Lane in Winshill this morning.

"We will be returning to the chip shop at some point this week to give some safety advice to the owner and staff."

East Staffordshire Assistant Area Commander, Pete Jones

Two people called to report smoke issuing from the back of the chip shop at around 11.30am this morning.

On arrival, crews found a fire in progress in a chip shop which has six flats above it – it was not known at the time if anyone was in any of the flats.

East Staffordshire Assistant Area Commander, Pete Jones said: "On arrival, the chip shop occupier was already outside and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered to tackle the fire using one hose reel jet.

"The flats above were also checked however were unaffected by the fire. No one was trapped and all persons were accounted for quickly. Two people were in two of the flats and were asked to leave temporarily as a precaution whilst firefighters dealt with the fire - they have now been allowed back in.

"The fire involved the extraction system in the preparation area and started accidentally due to an electrical fault. The fire has caused some heat damage to the preparation area and equipment and the shop is heavily smoke logged throughout. The flats were unaffected by the fire.

"We will be returning to the chip shop at some point this week to give some safety advice to the owner and staff."

The fire was out by 12.25pm and crews left the scene at 1.30pm.
