Building Fire in Fenton

21/11/2011

Fire and rescue crews have been working through the night tackling a fire at the Old Hewitts Factory on Victoria Road in Fenton.

“The whole building was affected by the fire and parts of the roof structure had failed, the quick actions of the attending crews stopped the fire from spreading to adjoining properties.”

The call was received at around 10:30pm reporting the fire. Crews from Hanley, Newcastle, Longton, Stone and the water carrier from Cheadle were mobilised to the incident.

The fire involved a single storey derelict building approximately 50 metres by 30 metres containing plastics, cardboard and general rubbish.

At the height of the incident there were six fire engines, the aerial ladder platform and the control unit in use with approximately 40 firefighters at the scene.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two main jets to bring the blaze under control.

Station Manager Carl Mason said: “The whole building was affected by the fire and parts of the roof structure had failed, the quick actions of the attending crews stopped the fire from spreading to adjoining properties.”

The incident was scaled down through the night once the fire was under control. Fire crews left the incident at 11am this morning but will return later today to carry out a re-inspection.
