Cannock Community Fire Station has been officially opened by Olympic Gold Medallist, Imran Sherwani.

"The community station achieves a dual function by catering for the firefighters as well as the community. It’s been an absolute honour to be invited to open this new community facility."

Imran Sherwani, who lives in Rugeley, was on the winning GB Hockey team at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. The official opening ceremony was attended by local dignitaries, representatives from partner organisations and the firefighters based at the station. Local group, ‘Chase Theatre Craft’ entertained guests with their singing prior to the ceremony starting.

Imran Sherwani, who is now Director of Hockey at Denstone College in Uttoxeter, said: "The community station achieves a dual function by catering for the firefighters as well as the community. I think it’s a fantastic idea to bridge both requirements. It’s been an absolute honour to be invited to open this new community facility."

Chief Fire Officer/Chief Executive, Peter Dartford said: "At a time where there is a real buzz of excitement about the forthcoming Olympics it seemed fitting that we invited an Olympic Gold Medallist to open one of our community fire stations.

"The station here at Cannock is already proving hugely successful, over 3500 people visited within two weeks of opening to the community and we are attracting regular bookings from a range of groups."

Firefighters moved into the new community fire station, which comes complete with state of the art training and professional development facilities, in February 2011. The station has been designed to provide a range of facilities for the local community and partners to use, including a community meeting room, a dedicated area for student firefighters, a gym for supervised groups and a partnership area. A total of 42 firefighters are based at the station.
