Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service - Preventing, Protecting, Responding

Stafford Winter Safety

22/11/2011

Firefighters will be offering advice on vehicle maintenance and winter driving to shoppers at the Stafford Asda store this Saturday.

“Drivers need to be aware of how to maintain their vehicles in bad weather, for example not driving off before all of the windows and windscreen are clear from snow, ice or condensation as this can seriously restrict visibility."

The firefighters will have a stand in the store’s car park from 10am until 4pm. The event is taking place as part of National Road Safety Week which runs from 21st – 28th November.

Risk Reduction Co-ordinator, Jess Patten said: “Firefighters will be showing drivers how to carry out simple vehicle checks and what to look for - ensuring all lights are working correctly, the windscreen is free from chips or scratches and tyres are in a suitable condition and have the appropriate pressure.

“Drivers need to be aware of how to maintain their vehicles in bad weather, for example not driving off before all of the windows and windscreen are clear from snow, ice or condensation as this can seriously restrict visibility.

“We will also be giving them advice on how to adapt their driving to severe road conditions and free scrapers will be available for them to take away with them.”
