One woman was still awake downstairs and watching the television when she realised something was on fire in the kitchen. She went upstairs to raise the alarm with the other occupants in the house and called the fire service.

Two crews from Burton and one crew from Tutbury attended the incident and used ladders to reach the woman upstairs and the two young children. The second woman was lead to safety by firefighters.

Two hose reel jets were used to extinguish the fire, which was confined to the kitchen.

Group Manager, Tim Hyde said: "All four occupants were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation and a fire investigation is now ongoing to establish the cause of the fire."
