Firefighters were alerted to the fire at 8.50pm last night following a call from a mobile monitoring agency who reported the occupant was still inside.

Two crews from Burton and one crew from Tutbury were sent to the incident and four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus forced entry into the property.

They found the woman semi-conscious and suffering from severe burns and smoke inhalation. She was carried outside and immediately taken to Queens Hospital.

Two hose reel jets were used to extinguish the fire, which had started in the kitchen and spread to the living room. The property was severely smoke logged.

Station Manager, Paul Richins said: "Crews had been informed that the occupant was still inside the property and so on arrival immediately forced entry and carried out the rescue of an 88-year-old woman.

"She was transported to hospital however she sadly passed away some time later. Investigations into the fire are now ongoing and we would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the woman’s family."
