Student Firefighter Celebration Event

10/02/2012

Stafford Student Firefighters will celebrate receiving a £14,000 donation at an event next weekend.

"My colleagues and I are delighted to be able to help fund the student firefighter scheme which is a really exciting programme."

Chairman of the Fire and Rescue Authority, Len Bloomer

Staffordshire County Councillors have donated the money to the scheme and to show their appreciation the student firefighters will be showing off their skills at a special event on 18 February.

The Worshipful the Mayor, Cllr Stan Highfield, local councillors, including Staffordshire County Councillor and Chairman of the Fire and Rescue Authority, Len Bloomer, and the families of the student firefighters have been invited to the event.

Cllr Len Bloomer said: "My colleagues and I are delighted to be able to help fund the student firefighter scheme which is a really exciting programme.  As part of the programme the young people have developed their skills in leadership, teamwork and discipline, preparing them for life in the real world."

On the day, 20 student firefighters will take part in three demonstrations as well as holding show and tell workstations for attendees to the event. A number of these students will also be receiving their certificates after successfully completing a BTEC Level 2 Award in Fire and Rescue Services in the Community, in partnership with Stafford College.

Group Manager, Phil McFarlane said: "We are very proud to be engaging with the young people of the borough and celebrating their achievements. The student firefighter scheme is a fantastic experience which brings out the best in the students involved.

"The event will show the councillors who have contributed to the scheme how their donation will benefit the student firefighters and will also give the students a chance to show off their new skills to their families, local councillors and members of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service."
