Crews from Cannock and Rugeley were called to a fire involving a grill pan at 1.25pm this afternoon.
The occupier of the house on Brindley Crescent in Hednesford had turned on the cooker at the wall to warm the oven, not realising that the grill had also been turned on.
He then left the room to allow the oven to warm but around 20 minutes later a smoke alarm activated and on investigation he discovered the grill was alight.
He called the fire service and evacuated the property unharmed. Firefighters used one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire and also fitted a new smoke alarm upstairs before leaving, as there was only one smoke alarm fitted in the property.
The incident comes on the day that Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service has launched its annual cooking campaign. Staffordshire residents are urged to look when they cook and ensure appliances are kept clean and in good working order.
