Businesses are being reminded to take fire safety seriously after latest figures from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service revealed that there were over 300 fires at commercial premises between April 2011 and March 2012. Over 100 of these were started deliberately.
"We’d urge all businesses to take the necessary preventative measures to reduce the risk of a fire affecting their premises."
Business Support Manager, John Berrisford
Business Support Manager, John Berrisford said: "In the current economic climate we realise that for some businesses fire safety perhaps isn’t seen as a priority. However the reality of the situation is that there are a number of businesses, particularly smaller independent ones, which will never recover from a fire.
"The knock on effects are also massive – a fire affecting one business can in turn impact on suppliers, retailers and some people find themselves out of a job whether it be temporarily or in other cases permanently.
"We’d urge all businesses to take the necessary preventative measures to reduce the risk of a fire affecting their premises. Here at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service we offer a free resource called ‘Keep Your Business in Business’ which can be downloaded from the internet. The guide gives detailed information on how to make your business as risk free from fire as possible.
"We’d also encourage businesses to consider sprinkler systems, we’ve had a number of fires where sprinklers have activated, containing the fire and allowing the business to carry on operations as normal.
"From experience I know numerous businesses that have been affected by fire that wish in hindsight they’d dedicated some time to fire prevention and made use of the free resources we have available. Instead they have the much bigger task of trying to rebuild their business from the ashes."
