A family of four have their smoke alarms to thank for alerting them to a fire in a bedroom last night at their Cromwell Terrace home in Leek, although the cause of the fire wasn’t quite what they were expecting.
"The important thing here is that the smoke alarms were working and gave the occupants an early warning which allowed them to escape safely."
Station Manager, Carl Mason
Two crews from Leek were called to the house at just before 6pm last night and found the family waiting safely outside.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property and extinguished the fire using a hose reel jet.
Station Manager, Carl Mason said: "The fire hadn’t had chance to spread too far as the property had working smoke alarms so the family were alerted to the incident quickly.
"The cause of the fire is a little bizarre but not unheard of – a magnified mirror had reflected sunlight onto curtains which eventually caught fire. The fire then spread to nearby bedding and furniture however firefighters extinguished it before it could do much serious damage.
"The important thing here is that the smoke alarms were working and gave the occupants an early warning which allowed them to escape safely. This is an unpredictable type of incident but by making sure they had working smoke alarms this family escaped harm and their home is also relatively unscathed."
