Staffordshire residents are being advised that their smoke alarm batteries may be affected by the drop in temperature and begin to bleep periodically, signalling a low battery.
“We want people to be assured that if their smoke alarm battery does start to bleep it doesn’t mean that the smoke alarm won’t activate if there is a fire. "
Risk Reduction Manager Angela Leigh.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service Risk Reduction Manager, Angela Leigh said: “We have had an increase in calls recently from people reporting a periodic bleep coming from their smoke alarms.
“We want people to be assured that if their smoke alarm battery does start to bleep it doesn’t mean that the smoke alarm won’t activate if there is a fire.
“If your smoke alarm is a Fire Angel branded one that has been fitted by us and you are able to remove yourself, you can call Fire Angel support on 0800 141 2561 and they will post a new smoke alarm out to you free of charge for you to swap the bleeping alarm with. Fire Angel will also replace Staffordshire resident’s Fire Angel alarms if you have proof of purchase.
“If you don’t have a Fire Angel brand alarm or you can’t remove the alarm yourself, call Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s 0800 Team on 0800 0241 999 and someone from the Service will come out to you and replace your alarm free of charge.”
Colder temperatures can sometimes cause the low battery warning to sound on smoke alarms, which is a usually a bleeping sound every so often as opposed to the continuous bleeping of an activating smoke alarm. Angela added: “If you think your smoke alarm is activating call 999 immediately and ask for the Fire Service.
You’ll still be able to test that your smoke alarm works by pushing the button on it, if it doesn’t work you can book a free Home Fire Risk Check by calling the 0800 0241 999 number and we will come out to fit a new alarm free of charge.”
