Candle Fire in Tamworth

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is warning people of the dangers of candles following an incident that happened yesterday evening.

A call was received at 8.38pm reporting a fire at a property on The Green in Bonehill in Tamworth.

Fire and rescue crews from Tamworth Belgrave and Tamworth Mercia attended the incident which involved a fire in a first floor bedroom.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one hose reel jet to tackle the fire.

The fire had started due to a candle being placed on a bath which had been left unattended causing the bath to overheat and catch fire.

Risk Reduction Manager Glynn Luznyj said: “We would urge anyone using candles to ensure that they are in appropriate holders and are not placed on top of plastic surfaces or close to any combustible materials. We would also advise that candles are never left unattended and are extinguished before leaving the room or going to bed.”

The fire has caused severe damage to the bathroom and heavy smoke logging to the first floor, staircase and heavy water damage to the ground floor of the house.

The incident was closed at 10.33pm.
