Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service - Preventing, Protecting, Responding

Firefighters tackle chemical incident in Cannock

Firefighters are tackling a chemical incident at Laney Green near Junction 11 of the M6.

The Service was alerted to a lorry on fire in a lay-by on the A460 at 10.37am today.

Six appliances, from Cannock, Rugeley and Newcastle, attended the fire along with the incident response unit from Newcastle.

Crews used two sets of breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and foam to extinguish the blaze which broke out in the trailer. They separated the cab from the body of the lorry to aid the operation.

The fire was put out around midday and crews are currently carrying out a clean-up operation with support from the Environment Agency, highways team and the haulage company.

Station Manager Ian Housley said: “We believe that the fire, which is still being investigated, started in the trailer and caused a container of 1,000 litres of highly caustic material to leak out. Other cargo on the trailer was unaffected.

“Crews arrived on the scene quickly and were able to extinguish the fire in under an hour and a half.”
