Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service - Preventing, Protecting, Responding

Eye-catching poster campaign is launched

04/10/2013

A potentially life-saving campaign which calls on people to help keep older relatives, friends and neighbours safe has been launched.

"Just by taking the advice given in this campaign and going to an older neighbour, friend or relative’s home and ‘Pushing the Button’ could end up saving their life."

Head of Risk Reduction Glynn Luznyj

Two sets of eye-catching posters are being delivered to various venues, including GP surgeries, libraries and community centres, across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.

One banner encourages people to do a ‘good deed’ by testing smoke alarms in the homes of vulnerable members of the community.

The other poster urges active older people to regularly test their own smoke alarms, perhaps tying the checks in with weekly trips or events so that it becomes part of their routine.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service also offers a weekly email service which reminds people that they need to ‘Push the Button’.

Head of Risk Reduction Glynn Luznyj said: "Older people are some of the most vulnerable members of our community which is why it is absolutely vital that we look out for them. They are at highest risk of fire in the home with people over the age of 80 being 10 times more likely to die in a fire than those aged 30 or under.

"Just by taking the advice given in this campaign and going to an older neighbour, friend or relative’s home and ‘Pushing the Button’ could end up saving their life."

By 2035 almost a quarter of the UK’s population will be aged 65 and over.

People are being encouraged to book a free Home Fire Risk Check by calling Freephone 0800 0241 999. This is open to residents of all ages and involves firefighters or technicians visiting your home to fit smoke alarms, identifying any fire risks and discussing fire safety.

In an emergency dial 999. For all other non-emergency enquiries contact: 08451 22 11 55 or log onto: www.staffordshirefire.gov.uk or www.direct.gov.uk/firekills
