Two pupils from Hassell Street School in Newcastle visited the learning and development centre at the fire service headquarters as part of democracy week.
Local Democracy Week is an annual event which aims to raise awareness among young people of how councils operate, to tell them about the opportunities available for taking part in decision-making at local level and, as a result, draw their attention to how taking part in local affairs is crucial in maintaining effective local democracy.
The Newcastle school chose two pupils to be Mayor and Mayoress for the week, which involved them shadowing the real Mayor at certain events.
They visited the fire service headquarters in Stone last Friday where they had a tour of the site including the control room and the new learning and development centre, as well as riding in a fire engine.
Business Advisor Jamie Richards said: “We welcome visitors in learning and development and this was a perfect opportunity to educate young people about fire safety.”
