Firefighters tackle blaze at a Newcastle restaurant


Firefighters have tackled a blaze that broke out in the basement of a restaurant in Newcastle.

Crews from Newcastle and Hanley attended the incident at Yummy Yummy which happened shortly after 2am yesterday.

They used four breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire at the Bridge Street eatery.

Group Manager Ian Housley said: “A member of the restaurant staff alerted the Service to the blaze after smelling smoke and going to the basement to investigate. Firefighters from Hanley and Newcastle acted quickly and were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the main restaurant area.”

The fire caused damage to the electric and gas meters in the building.

Crews left the scene at 5.54am. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
