Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service - Preventing, Protecting, Responding

National Firefighter Selection Tests

Reference No: 004/2014
Request Date: 03/01/2014

Request

The National Firefighter Selection Tests were introduced by the government some years ago and are in widespread use throughout the UK fire and rescue service. The tests comprise two elements: a battery of physical tests, and a series of psychometric tests.

For the purposes of this request, I am interested only in the physical element of the tests.

I would like to know the following:

Does your brigade use the physical element of the National Firefighter Selection Tests, or something similar, for purposes of recruitment?

When were these tests adopted by your brigade?

How many prospective recruits have undertaken the physical element of the tests since they were adopted by your brigade?

How many of these prospective recruits failed the physical element of the tests?

Response

Please see attached spread sheet, but also note that National Firefighter Selection Tests were introduced in 2006, we only have computer records going back to 2010.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service have not recruited Whole time since 2008, so these figures relate to Retained Staff.
