Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging people to be extra careful when they are cooking.

The warning comes following an incident that happened yesterday afternoon.

“We urge people to remain in the kitchen at all times when they are cooking. If you the leave the room it is very easy to become distracted and that’s when fires happen.”

Station Manager Ian Broadhead.

A call was received at 4.06pm reporting a fire at a house on Parkfields Close in Newcastle.

Upon arrival firefighters from Newcastle discovered a smoke filled kitchen, caused by a pan that had been left on a gas hob which had overheated.

The occupant of the property, an elderly lady, had left the house and returned home to find the pan smoking.

Station Manager Ian Broadhead said:” The occupant was extremely lucky, if she had been out a few minutes longer the pan may have caught fire. Fortunately the lady was not injured and there was no damage to the property.
