Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service has slammed arsonists for starting a deliberate fire at a former high school on Sunday.
At the height of the incident 30 firefighters dealt with the fire at Discovery Academy South on Greendock Street, Longton.
The Discovery Academy relocated to a brand new school building last year, which is fitted with sprinklers to ensure pupils and teachers are as safe as possible from fire.
Kelvin Knapper, Protection Manager for the north of the county, said: “This deliberately started fire tied up a number of crews for most of Sunday afternoon. It put our firefighters at risk as well as the general public.
“Sadly schools are at increased risk of fire, which is why we are so pleased that the new building the school is based in is fitted with sprinklers.”
Sprinklers are fitted in new secondary and special schools built under the Building Schools for the Future programme across Stoke-on-Trent.
