Firefighters have been tackling a fire in Tunstall since late yesterday evening.
The emergency call for the incident was received at 11.24pm on Sunday evening. At the height of the incident there were 64 firefighters from across the county dealing with the fire at Mr Big Deals on the junction of High Street and Roundwell Street in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent.
Director of Response Rob Barber said: “Firefighters have worked hard to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading to neighbouring properties. It is too dangerous for firefighters to enter the building and so they have been fighting the fire from the outside. We have used two aerial ladder platforms to tackle the fire at height and we have also used some special high expansion foam, brought in from West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service, which has been pumped into the basement area.
“Firefighters will remain at the indent overnight to ensure there are no hot spots that reignite. Once an assessment has been made into the safety of the building we will look to enter to ensure that the fire is fully extinguished and investigate how the fire started.
“Our business support team are assisting the owners and neighbouring businesses as we are aware of the impact fires like these can have on the local economy.”
Fire Investigation Officer Kelvin Knapper said: “We have done some initial fire investigation work interviewing witnesses, however once we have access to the building we will be in a position to identify where the fire started and what the source of ignition was.”
