Staffordshire’s Chief Fire Officer Peter Dartford has been appointed President of the Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA).

"I am delighted to take up this national role at such an exciting yet challenging time for fire and rescue services across the UK. I look forward to raising the profile of the Chief Fire Officers Association and the services it represents as well as using the role as an opportunity to promote our fantastic county and in particular the outstanding work that goes on day in and day out in Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service."

The association represents chief fire officers, senior managers and executives from fire and rescue services across the UK.

The appointment was made during the CFOA annual general meeting held at St George’s Park in Burton-on-Trent yesterday. Peter Dartford took over from the current President, Paul Fuller who is Chief Fire Officer for Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Upon accepting the appointment Peter Dartford said: “I am delighted to take up this national role at such an exciting yet challenging time for fire and rescue services across the UK. I look forward to raising the profile of the Chief Fire Officers Association and the services it represents as well as using the role as an opportunity to promote our fantastic county and in particular the outstanding work that goes on day in and day out in Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

“What I hope to achieve is recognition that the UK fire and rescue service is doing, and can do, much more than just respond to fires. We have spent several years working as part of a broader agenda - our involvement stretches into everything from smoking cessation to reducing youth offending to improving community cohesion. However there are still organisations and individuals out there that there that aren’t aware of this. We need to make it known that our contribution to society goes well beyond the traditional expectations of a fire and rescue service.”

Peter Dartford’s first official engagement as President of CFOA will be to open a national conference being held in Staffordshire. The conference, at Branston Golf Club, is being held by Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and is regarding mental health and assistive technology.

During his one year presidency Peter Dartford will divide his time between his role as CFOA President and as Chief Fire Officer of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, supported by his senior management team.
