A paramedic is to be presented with a Chief Fire Officer’s Certificate of Commendation tomorrow evening for his brave actions at a road traffic collision last year.

"I am very pleased to be able to recognise the selfless actions of a colleague from our partner emergency service, who was clearly motivated to do what he could to help someone in distress. What he did exemplifies our shared commitment to improve outcomes for those we serve and it’s absolutely right that we congratulate Steve."

Steve Bunker was travelling whilst off duty along Sutton Lane in Derbyshire on July 7 when he came across the collision.

The incident involved a vehicle that had left the roadway and gone into the front of a house.

One male casualty was inside the car with very serious injuries.

Steve removed the male casualty from the pick-up truck before the arrival of fire crews from Tutbury.

He worked to save the life of the male whilst putting his own life in danger due to possible further collapse of the house.

Chief Fire Officer/Chief Executive Peter Dartford said: "I am very pleased to be able to recognise the selfless actions of a colleague from our partner emergency service, who was clearly motivated to do what he could to help someone in distress.  What he did exemplifies our shared commitment to improve outcomes for those we serve and it’s absolutely right that we congratulate Steve."

Sadly despite the best efforts of Steve and the firefighters, the male casualty passed away.
