Large industrial unit fire in Stafford

Firefighters are dealing with a fire at an industrial unit on Tilcon Avenue, Stafford.

"When crews arrived they were met with a large industrial unit fire which had created plumes of smoke in the area. The force of the blaze set fireworks off inside the factory, creating what sounded like explosions. The fireworks and flames came through the roof of the building."

At its peak around 50 firefighters were tackling the blaze which broke out at 5.15pm yesterday.

The incident involves an industrial unit approximately 60 metres by 20 metres in size, which was well alight when crews arrived.

The incident is now being scaled down but at its height there were eight fire engines along with four specialist appliances. Firefighters came from Stafford, Stone, Codsall, Penkridge, Eccleshall, Cannock, Rugeley, Longton and Hanley.

Crews from Brewood and the Aerial Ladder Platform from Burton are currently damping down.

Group Manager Tim Hyde said: "When crews arrived they were met with a large industrial unit fire which had created plumes of smoke in the area. The force of the blaze set fireworks off inside the factory, creating what sounded like explosions. The fireworks and flames came through the roof of the building.

"Crews tackled the fire from the outside and worked hard to prevent it from spreading to other nearby premises. The fire was brought under control by approximately 9pm. We are currently at the site, damping down and our fire investigation team will be working closely with the team from West Midlands Fire Service and Staffordshire Police to identify the cause.

"We will also continue to work closely alongside our colleagues from Staffordshire Police and West Midlands Ambulance Service to ensure the safety of the public."

Crews are expected to remain at the scene until early next week.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
