Smokers who want to kick the habit in the New Year are being invited to attend a clinic which is set to be launched at Tamworth Belgrave Fire Station.

"The 'Time to Quit' sessions are an excellent example of partnership working and of public sector organisations supporting each other in their quest to improve the health, wellbeing and safety of the communities we serve."

Tom Osborne - Community Support Officer

Community Support Officers (CSOs) will be running the ‘Time to Quit’ sessions from 1.30pm-4pm every Wednesday, starting on January 14.

The CSOs have been trained by the NHS Stop Smoking Service and will be offering support to anyone who lives, works or is registered with a GP in Staffordshire or who lives in Stoke-on-Trent.

Smokers who want to give up will be able to access expert advice for up to 12 weeks with medications available, on prescription, to help them quit.

People should call 0300 123 1161 to book a place on the course.

There are a number of clinics operating across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent with more than 10,000 people attending the sessions annually. One in every two people successfully quit after four weeks.

Community Support Officer Tom Osborne said: "The 'Time to Quit' sessions are an excellent example of partnership working and of public sector organisations supporting each other in their quest to improve the health, wellbeing and safety of the communities we serve.

"We believe that this service will not only help people to boost their health and prolong their lives, it will also have a positive impact on reducing the number of fires caused by smoking materials that have been carelessly discarded.

"The fewer people that smoke, the less risk there is of people falling victim to such incidents. I would urge anyone who is thinking about quitting smoking as part of a New Year’s resolution to give the sessions a try, there is absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain."
