A long-serving member of the Fire and Rescue Authority has received a posthumous award for his dedication and commitment to the Service.

"I am extremely proud to be at the helm of an organisation that has such a dedicated, hard-working and innovative team, be they operational firefighters, support staff, Fire and Rescue Authority members or volunteers, their contributions are greatly appreciated."

Chief Fire Officer Peter Dartford

Chief Fire Officer Peter Dartford recognised the work carried out by South Staffordshire Councillor Rex Roberts, OBE, who was a member of the Authority for several years before sadly passing away in 2014.

Councillor Roberts’ son John accepted the accolade on his behalf at the prestigious MORE Awards ceremony, held at Staffordshire County Showground last night.

The event, now in its eighth year, aims to highlight the achievements of operational and support staff as well as Fire and Rescue Authority members, partners and volunteers.

Councillor Roberts was awarded the title of Member Involvement in the Community for the extensive work that he undertook, including playing a key role in a number of the Service’s strategic ambitions, such as the PFI initiative which has seen new community fire stations developed across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. His drive and ambition have been described as commendable.

Chief Fire Officer Peter Dartford said: "The calibre of the shortlisted nominees this year was second to none and the winners of the MORE Awards are incredibly well-deserving. They have shown an admirable level of commitment to serving the communities of Staffordshire and have played an important role in helping to make the county one of the safest places to live, visit and work.

"I am extremely proud to be at the helm of an organisation that has such a dedicated, hard-working and innovative team, be they operational firefighters, support staff, Fire and Rescue Authority members or volunteers, their contributions are greatly appreciated."
