Event to inform landlords of new laws

A series of events will take place across the county to inform landlords of new laws that are due to come into force.

"It is absolutely vital that landlords are aware of and understand the new regulations that will come into force on October 1 2015. They need to take immediate action to fit smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in their tenants’ homes if they do not already have them. Statistics show that people are four times more likely to die in a fire if they do not have a working smoke alarm – a fact which clearly demonstrates the potential consequences for people who live in homes without the safety devices."

From October 1 2015 all landlords will be required to fit at least one smoke alarm on each floor of the property as well as a carbon monoxide alarm in rooms containing a solid fuel appliance.

They will also need to check that all of the alarms are working when a new tenancy starts.

During the sessions, Fire Safety Officers will give away free smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to all landlords who agree to sign up to a Home Fire Risk Check, which is also free, for the properties they rent out.

The fire and rescue service will be holding presentations, from 11am-1pm, at the following community fire stations:

• Hanley – Tuesday, July 7
• Newcastle – Monday, July 20
• Cannock –Tuesday, August 4
• Wombourne – Wednesday, August 12
• Stafford – Monday, August 17
• Tamworth (Belgrave) – Monday, August 24
• Biddulph – Wednesday, September 2
• Sandyford – Wednesday, September 16
• Longton – Friday, September 18

There will also be sessions at the following community fire stations from 8am-5pm:

• Hanley – Thursday, October 1
• Cannock - Thursday, October 1
• Tamworth - Thursday, October 1

"Fire and rescue services have been given nearly 500,000 smoke alarms and 52,000 carbon monoxide detectors to distribute to landlords completely free of charge. I would strongly urge landlords to attend one of the sessions that are due to take place across the county, to collect the alarms and get some advice from the Service."
