Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service - Preventing, Protecting, Responding

Residents urged to book free Home Fire Risk Check

24/09/2015

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging residents from the east of the county to book their free Home Fire Risk Check to ensure they are as safe as possible from fire in their home. Firefighters are currently in the area and will be delivering a letter and leaflet explaining the service with a date of their return for the life-saving checks.

“We encourage anyone who is home when we call to take up the offer of a free Home Fire Safety Check – it could just save your life. “A Home Fire Risk Check helps us identify any potential fire hazards in your home. This may include something which you yourself had not realised was a hazard. We will ensure that you have working smoke alarms and fit new ones if you don’t."

Station Manager, Jason Maudsley

A Home Fire Risk Check involves a member of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service visiting your home at an agreed time during either the day, evening or at the weekend. They will then accompanying you around every room in your property with the aim of spotting fire risks in the home and make certain you know what to do in order to reduce these risks. They will also help you plan an escape route if there is a fire and ensure that there are working smoke alarms on every floor of your home.

The free service has been offered throughout the east of the county and to date firefighters have carried out 47 checks and fitted 75 smoke detectors in the area. All Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service firefighters carry photo identification with them and will show you this before they enter your home.

“At this time of year it’s also important to consider the elderly, who are often more likely to feel the cold and may be reliant on portable heaters and open fires.

“If you are elderly, or know someone elderly who hasn’t received a free Home Fire Risk Check we’d urge you to get in touch on our freephone number 0800 0241 99, so we can arrange a visit by our firefighters or technicians.

“Older people can’t always test their smoke alarms themselves and may even need a specialist alarm if they’re hard of hearing or partially sighted. If anyone has any concerns about an older person, they can call us on 0800 0241 999 and we can arrange a visit to their house to check on their concerns in relation to fire safety and give the relevant advice.”
