Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service - Preventing, Protecting, Responding

Retained firefighter recruitment drive in Penkridge

17/11/2015

A recruitment drive looking for retained firefighters to help protect the people of Penkridge is currently running.

"Our retained firefighters will be able to utilise their existing experience to strengthen their crew but they will also have access to a whole host of training opportunities which will boost their knowledge and expertise too. We want to hear from you if you are a hard-working team player and I’d urge anyone who thinks they fit into that category to submit an application to join our dedicated team."

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is on the lookout for five part-time crew members to be based at the brand new station on Boscomoor Lane.

Retained firefighters provide emergency response cover from either their home or work base, which must be within five minutes’ travelling time of their station. Applicants must be aged 18 or over.

They can be called upon to tackle a range of incidents including fires, floods, road traffic collisions and chemical spills. Retained firefighters can also get involved in community fire safety initiatives in their local area, including free Home Fire Risk Checks and school visits.

Many part-time crew members provide cover to fit around their hours of primary employment, while some have a full-time job outside of the Service and have an agreement with their employer that they can leave work if they are alerted to an incident.

People interested in becoming a retained firefighter will need to fill in an application form, pass written literacy and numeracy tests, physical tests, an interview and a medical.

Successful applicants will take part in an initial training course and, following its completion, will attend weekly drill nights to ensure they maintain their skills. In addition, the retained firefighters will be able to participate in a whole host of other courses which run throughout the year.

Retained Support Officer Gary Fox, who covers Penkridge, said: "This is an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic people, of all ages, to learn new skills at the same time as giving something back to the community that they live or work in. The role of a retained firefighter is extremely rewarding and the crews develop a real sense of friendship and comradery which is vital when you are potentially going into dangerous situations such as house fires or dealing with road traffic collisions.
