A budding geologist from Stafford has completed an ‘explosive’ Prince’s Trust work placement where business-as-usual included preparing quarry walls ready for blasting

“All in all, the two weeks with Hope Construction Materials have been truly eye opening and I have learnt much about an industry which has reinforced my ambition of becoming a Geologist. Thanks to everyone I met at Hope who I found to be friendly, patient, down-to-earth and more than willing to give their time to help me out, which I am more than grateful for.”

The Prince’s Trust programme, run in partnership with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, equips young people with the skills, confidence and know-how to find a job in their chosen field.

Rob Lauder, aged 20 from Stafford joined Hope Construction Materials for two weeks and during that time worked at Holme Hall Quarry, Dowlow Quarry, Hope Cement Works and Stafford Concrete Plant.

Rob Lauder said: “I learned what work was like day to day in the quarry. We profiled the quarry wall ready for blasting, measured the inclination of the drills holes and packed it with explosives. Then I watched them blow it.
