Firefighters support dementia cafe initiative

05/05/2016

Firefighters will be supporting this year’s Dementia Awareness Week when they attend Dementia Community Cafés across the north of the county.

“Many people with dementia want to live independently at home for as long as they can, so it's important to ensure they are as safe as possible."

Prevent Manager, Donna Broadhead

The community cafés, hosted by Approach, provide a space for those affected by dementia to meet others in a similar situation, and help to ease the stigma, loneliness and stress sometimes experienced by those affected by the condition.

Community safety officers and volunteers will present a Home Safety talk and firefighters from Sandyford Community Fire Station will take part in the Dementia Awareness Week ‘Walk to Remember’ on May 15.

This year’s Dementia Awareness Week runs from May 15 – 21.

Approach aims to promote the welfare of older people with mental health needs and provides services for older people with dementia in the North Staffordshire area.

Prevent Manager, Donna Broadhead said: “Many people with dementia want to live independently at home for as long as they can, so it's important to ensure they are as safe as possible.

“Having dementia can make accidents at home more likely but there are many practical ways to help minimise the risk of fire in the home. Our Home Safety talks highlight ways you can make your home safer, such as fitting working smoke alarms and give advice about electrical safety and planning escape routes.

“Dementia can be scary but knowing there is support and help available can provide reassurance to those living with the condition."
